What is the purpose of herbs, and why should we give them to our dogs?

What is the purpose of herbs, and why should we give them to our dogs?

Many of you already know that this year I finally found the perfect course – and successfully completed it.
I officially became a certified canine herbalist. Funny enough, this term didn’t even really exist in Hungarian before 😄

My goal is to help you with herbal recipes and natural solutions, so you can support your dog’s health in the most natural way possible.
That’s why Tuesdays are now all about recipes.

Herbs – ancient knowledge, still relevant today

Herbs have been used in medicine and traditional healing for thousands of years to treat a wide range of conditions.
Even today, they are widely used in many parts of the world – especially in Asia and Africa.

Herbalists know that plants have a kind of natural intelligence.
Not like humans, of course – they don’t play chess, scroll Facebook or ride bicycles 😉
But many studies have shown that plants have their own form of communication – a language animals seem to understand very well.

A real-life story

A friend of ours has a Vizsla who had been suffering from chronic ear infections for a long time.
Itching, discharge – nothing helped permanently.

He decided to try our sage tonic.
He applied a few drops to a cotton pad and first simply let the dog smell it.

If he hadn’t told me himself, I wouldn’t have believed it:
By the second time, the dog lay down on her own, rested her head on his lap and calmly allowed her ears to be cleaned.

After just one week, the improvement was already visible.
That’s when the “language of plants” immediately came to my mind – something dogs clearly understand.

Plants communicate – and they act

Plants are “chatting” all day long – we know that by now 😊
But they also have the ability to repel certain organisms and attract others.

And whether we’re talking about your body or your dog’s:
Herbs are far more acceptable to the body than synthetic vitamins or medications.
That doesn’t need much explanation – it’s simple common sense.

What I do as a canine herbalist – and what I don’t

As a canine herbalist, I do not diagnose diseases or prescribe medical treatments – especially not online or on social media.
I’m not a veterinarian, and that’s not my role.

My long-term goal is prevention.

Dr. Gábor Lenkei once explained it beautifully:

If you treat your body like a garden – feeding it, caring for it and watering it regularly – weeds won’t have a chance to grow.

So it’s all about prevention, prevention and prevention.

What do herbs actually do?

Herbs support the immune system and help the body function properly.
They don’t eliminate diseases directly, but instead create an internal environment where viruses, parasites or bacteria cannot thrive.

In pharmaceuticals, usually only one or two active compounds of a plant are isolated – which makes them less effective overall.

Think of the difference between herbs and medication like the difference between kibble and raw feeding:
The first is quick and promising but often problematic; the second is high-quality, sustainable and healthy in the long run.

“Did wolves really collect herbs?”

I often hear sceptical comments like:
“Canine herbalist? Did wolves really collect herbs in the forest?”

Well…
Who has seen a wolf in the wild recently?
And who would have seen one 3,000 years ago?

Wolves definitely consumed herbs – if not directly, then through the stomach contents of their prey.
Otherwise, how would your dog instinctively know which grass to chew when their stomach is upset?

My own dog, Tódi, always eats the same type of grass.
Even if he doesn’t see what another dog is eating, he still knows exactly which grass is right for him.
He smells it, they somehow “communicate” – I honestly don’t know how 😄 But he knows.

Walking this conscious path together

Luckily, more and more of you are already choosing to support your dogs’ health with herbs and natural solutions.
I’ll continue guiding you on this path and share everything you need to know:

  • What should you pay attention to?

  • How should herbs be dosed?

  • When should you use which herb?
